Theresa Ganz

Theresa Ganz cuts photographs of organic forms with a scalpel, creating webs of negative space and shadows on the wall. There is tension between the realism of the photographic elements and the constructed and fantastical nature of their context within the collage. Scale and focus shift throughout the composition. The photographic image, with its direct reference to reality, dictates the strange and awkward shapes that result.

Her most recently completed body of work‚ Shadow on the Green is a meditation on national grief internalized and the link between the individual and the state. The pieces in this body of work progress from verdant to bare suggesting a seasonal progression into winter. The black ribbon adds a sense of gravity and chaos. NB: In the Victorian language of flowers nasturtium represent ”Patriotism“ and “Victory in Battle”. In Judaism the black ribbon is a symbol of mourning.
