CCNY is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition of the winners of the 2013 National Photography Competition, juried by artist Justine Kurland. The three First Place Winners – Winona Barton-Ballentine, Andrew Russel Coates, and Curran Hatleberg have each taken very distinctive approaches to the medium, and offer three uncommon visions.

After viewing over 300 entries, juror Justine Kurland summed up her experience with this statement:
“Photography can do so many things well. The impossibility of judging photographers is the impossibility of judging apples from oranges. So rather than choosing a first, second, and third place winner, the three photographers I’ve selected represent three distinct photographic possibilities that I hold equally dear. For simplicity I will call them discovery, construction and accident. Curran Hatleberg’s photographs narrate a quasi-fictional quasi-documentary story of the American scene, drawing from the history of photography, the world as he finds it, and a highly literary imagination. Winona Barton-Ballentine’s photographs deconstruct 50’s cookbook still lives, reassembling them as enigmatic kitchen tableaus with an ambivalent attitude about domestic space and women’s traditional role in it. Andrew Russel Coate’s photograms map the pulsing lights of fireflies bouncing inside of mason jars, to record the alchemical and accidental as well as a lyrical abstraction of summer nights.”

In addition to the exhibition, the winners will also have their work shown on the CCNY website. Joining their work on the website will be photography from the sixteen Honorable Mentions artists – Lynley Bernstein, Gregg Evans, Martha Fleming-Ives, Tommy Kwak, Kate Levy, Nick Meyer, William Miller, Duncan Oja, Nandita Raman, Claudia Retegan, Jenny Riffle, Christopher Rodriguez, Emine Gozde Sevim, Maggie Shannon, Alex M. Smith, and Sean Stewart. Please click here to see the full competition website gallery.
