CCNY presents Video Subtexts, hosted and curated by Yulia Tikhonova. The program will include the work of three New York-based artists– Rico Gatson, Lauren Kelley, and Julika Rudelius, whose work explores the edge between documentary practice and postmodern strategies of archival collage and cinematic construction. Challenging cliches of media culture, the artists question, often with satirical humor, assumptions about issues of social justice and cultural identity, recontextualizing and reformatting various kinds of documentary and historical footage.
In her recent video Rites of Passage, Julika Rudelius uncovers the insinuating relationship between high–ranking politicians and their sycophantic new interns. German–born Ridelius is currently included in Dress Codes, the Third ICP Triennial of Photography and Video. She studied video at the Rijks Academy (Amsterdam) and in 2006, she participated in the ISCP Residency in New York and has lived there since.
Rico Gatson, whose work Historical Lessons draws upon controversies of African–American history, teaches sculpture at NYU. He was born in Georgia, reared in Southern California and graduated from Yale in 1991. Selected exhibitions include the Cheekwood Art Museum in Nashville, Tennessee, Studio Museum in Harlem, and Exit Art in New York.
Lauren Kelley received a MFA from the School of Art Institute of Chicago. Kelley has studied at the prestigious Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Skowhegan, Maine and is currently a resident artist at the CORE Program, Museum of Fine Arts Houston. Selected exhibition include Brand New Heavies, Collette Blanchard Gallery, New York, NY (2009) and Rupture in Rapture, Arthouse, Austin, TX (2008)

The presentation of Video Subtexts, moderated by curator Yulia Tikhonova, will be followed by a Q & A session. All three artists are included in the collection of the Artist Pension Trust.
Yulia Tikhonova, Russian–born, New York–based curator and a current second year student of the Center for Curatorial Studies program at Bard College. Recently Tikhonova contributed to the Third Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art and curated an on–line exhibition for the Artist Pension Trust.
