Honorable Mention Artist: Marco Bell

Marco Bell

Statement:
My work is rooted in the confrontation between contradictory realities of contemporary society. I think of my photographs as reminders of the underlying logic of power. I’m interested in the rhetorical use, abuse, and destruction of language, in the intersection of the material and the symbolic, in the ambiguities and abstractions of the literal, in the annihilation of thought and individuality.

I’ve wanted to deepen into the manifestation of people’s deepest beliefs by portraying the Orwellian political landscape of our time. In the series Edges, language is not portrayed as an abstract system of communication, but as a material form that can be manipulated and fragmented.

Bio:
Marco Bell (born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 1983) is a visual artist and journalist (MA in Communications and Media, Universidad Monteávila, Caracas. 2006), and a current candidate for an MFA Photography degree (Dean’s Merit Scholarship) at Parsons The New School for design in New York. His multidisciplinary work can be described as playful and socially engaged.

Bell got involved into photography in 2003. Shortly thereafter, he was awarded with the First Prize in the Salón Universitario de Fotografía (Universidad Central de Venezuela, Caracas, 2004). After several years working as a cultural journalist at the Venezuelan newspaper El Nacional, Bell started his fine art career. His work has been exhibited internationally.
