Ashlei Quinones

Statement:
Some will see a hopeless end. Others will see endless hope. This photographic study depicts a multitude of complicated emotions. Brett is a 22-year-old student who was diagnosed with HIV three years ago. Today, he stands strong, unwavering in his courage and emboldened by hope. The purpose of this study is to document this young man’s story, his individual challenges as well as his personal triumphs. My intention is to support Brett’s integrity and affirm his dignity and his personal power. I hope to increase HIV/AIDS awareness and to reinforce the message that the war against HIV/AIDS is ever present. Brett is determined to live a passionate and purposeful life.

He is POSITIVE, living with HIV.

Bio:
My name is Ashlei Quinones and I am 22 years old. I was born and raised in Southern California. I recently received my BFA in photography from the School of Visual Arts, in New York City. As a documentary portrait photographer, I am committed to capturing current pertinent social issues. My first series, INDIVISIBLE, documents Iraq and Afghanistan combat veterans, as they struggle with their transition home. POSITIVE is my second series and is a documentation of one young man’s quest to live a purposeful life as he comes to terms with an HIV diagnosis. It is my intention to continue to explore society’s current social concerns and raise awareness through my photographs.
